31 Mar: Clear skies with a light variable wind becoming moderate south-westerly in the afternoon and northerly in the evening.

A Wryneck was present at the Alameda Botanic gardens. Bee-eater flock heading north over town.

A Common Sandpiper and three Gannets were seen from Europa Point.

There was a Blue Tit and a Great Tit at Theatre Royal park.

 

30 Mar Some patchy cloud from the east clearing mid morning.  Winds moderate easterly.

Five Turnstones were present at Rosia Bay.

The Little Owl was still present at the cliffs north of Europa Point.  A Wren and three Greenfinches were singing by the Dolphin bar at Camp bay.

There were seven Shags at Little Bay (6ads, 1j). A Hoopoe was observed along Engineer road.  A Marsh Harrier flew north at midday.  Four House Martins, a Red-rumped Swallow and four Linnets flew past the Observatory in the morning.

A male Common Redstart was observed by the GibralFlora nursery.  Two recently fledged Blackbird chicks being fed by parent birds at a garden at Europa Point.

 

 

27 Mar: Levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour in a fresh easterly wind.

Only 10 new birds were ringed at the Observatory; three Bonelli's Warbler, six Chiffchaffs and a Common Redstart.  Yesterdays Bee-eater was retrapped.

Some species were seen from the Alameda Botanic gardens and included three Woodchat Shrikes, 34 House Martins, three Willow Warblers and two Common Redstarts.

There was a male Subalpine Warbler behind the Arengo's area, two Woodchat Shrikes on the talus slope and a Common Redstart at Rosia bay. There were 50 Pallid Swifts over Europort.

A total of 70 Puffins and three Razorbills were observed three miles off Catalan bay heading west out of the Mediterranean.

Good fall conditions indicated by some trans-Saharan migrants on the roof of the victualling yard in the early morning.  Among these were a Woodchat ShrikeWillow Warbler, an Iberian Chiffchaff, a Subalpine Warbler,a male Whitethroat, a Song Thrush and three Black Redstarts.

Some raptors are also crossing the Strait despite the weather and unfavourable winds.  So far there have been a Marsh Harrier and 20 Black Kites.

Around the Power station there was a Woodchat Shrike and a Black Redstart. A Woodchat Shrike, two Bonelli's Warblers and a Subalpine Warbler observed in the Arengo's gardens area.  A male Common Redstart was present at Commonwealth park,  another along Transport Lane and another by Bishop Canilla house. Also a Hoopoe and four Woodchat Shrikes by Europa mews.

Vineyards held a Woodchat Shrike, an Iberian Chiffchaff, a Redstart and two Wheatears.

The first Bonelli's Warbler and Common Redstart of the season were also ringed at the Observatory.  Two Tawny Owls were heard in the area of Princess Caroline's battery.

 

 

18 Mar:  Clear skies in the early morning, lasting a few hours when a bank of alto-stratus cloud headed east over the area that brought a light shower.  Winds light and variable, but turning to a moderate easterly.

Three Hoopoes was present at the Botanic Gardens, together with a Chaffinch and six Greenfinches. The Pied Crow was seen flying over the frontier but was later seen over the Alameda Botanic gardens.  An Eagle Owl was heard calling above the Arengo's garden area.

A walk along Europa road revealed two Collared Doves, a Kestrel, a Great Tit, a Chiffchaff, two Blackcaps, three Sardinian Warblers, a Wren and two Blackbirds.

A flock of 13 Avocets were seen around Western beach. An Audouin's Gull was observed in the area of Sandy bay.

A surprising encounter of two Barbary Partridges that were seen in the Alameda Botanic gardens.  This species is restricted to the Nature Reserve, Windmill Hill and the Sand Slopes and Talus slopes to the east of the Rock.

Europa Point held 15 Black-headed Gulls and five Gannets.  Two Black Kites, a Little Owl and three Ravens were observed in the vicinity.Two Purple Herons flew north past Europa Point.

Very few raptors were seen with only an Osprey, a Short-toed Eagle, a Booted Eagle and four Sparrowhawks.  Also seen were a flock of 14 Cormorants heading north, two Swallows and four Pallid Swifts.

Little bay held  three Shags, a Cormorant, two Sandwich Terns and two Willow Warblers. A male Common Redstart was observed at the Alameda Botanic gardens.

Only five retraps due to inclement weather, with three Sardinian Warblers and two Robins.

Seven Black Kites a Short-toed Eagle, a Booted Eagle, two Marsh Harriers and a Sparrowhawk were observed in the morning.

Two Barbary Partridges and a Grey Wagtail were seen by the waterfall at Little Bay.

Europa foreshore held four Chiffchaffs, two Sardinian Warblers, two Dartford Warblers and a Stonechat.

06 Mar:  Clear at dawn but soon overcast skies with rain showers during the day.  Winds moderate north-westerly.

Two Barbary Partridges, a Common Sandpiper and a Grey Wagtail were observed at the Waterfall at Little Bay.

Only two Black Kites were seen in the morning, with a further one in the afternoon together with a Marsh Harrier.

 

 

05 Mar:  Overcast skies with light drizzle in the morning, but clearing to give some sunny intervals in the afternoon.  Winds fresh north-westerly becoming westerly by midday and south-westerly in the afternoon.

Steady passage of Scopoli's Shearwaters into the Mediterranean in the morning involving several hundred birds.   A flock of four Crag Martins flew past Jews' Gate in the morning.

The Pied Crow was back at Europa Point area, apparently having ventured into Spain for a few days.
