Bird Sightings December 2025

31 Dec: Two Grey Herons were observed on the reclamation by Coaling Island.  Little bay held a few Gannets offshore, two Cormorants and two Shags, with a further two Shags heading towrads Europa Point.  At Europa advance, 30 Gannets offshore.

 

30 Dec:  At Four Corners, a Cormorant, a Sardinian Warbler, seven Common Starlings, a Black Redstart, a White Wagtail and eight House Sparrows.

 

29 Dec:  A visit to Governor's beach produced five Gannets, 30 Cormorants, three Shags, a Raven, two Black Redstarts, a Blue Rock Thrush and 20 House Sparrows.

The Long-legged Buzzard still present on the east side of the Rock, and the Pied Crow also present at Europa Point area.  Little Bay held a Shag and two Cormorants.

 

26 Dec:  Mainly clear skies with some high cloud.  Winds moderate westerly.

24 Dec:  Clear skies with a light north-westerly wind.

The wintering Long-legged Buzzard was observed on the east side of the Rock.

23 Dec:  Sunny with some westerly cloud increasing in the morning, becoming overcast with heavy rain showers in the afternoon and evening.  Winds north-westerly becoming westerly in thw afternoon.

 

 

22 Dec:  Clear skies with a fresh north wind turning to north westerly.

21 Dec:  Overcast skies with heavy rain showers.  Winds gale force south-westerly overnight and early morning, easing to a fresh westerly by midday. 

A one hour watch at Europa Point mid morning produced the following:-

All birds heading west.

At Eastern beach there were 11 Sandwich Terns and 31 Gannets.  A Grey Heron was observed at Ocean Village marina.

Western beach held a Common Sandpiper, four Sandwich Terns, 13 Black-headed Gulls two Cormorants and 12 House Sparrows.

 

 

20 Dec:   Mainly clear skies with some westerly cloud.  Winds moderate to fresh northerly.

A late morning watch from Europa Point produced the following:-

The Eagle Owl was heard on cliffs above Catlan Bay.  The Sparrowhawk was seen around Parson's Lodge.

 

19 Dec: Overcast skies with a moderate westerly wind.

A two hour watch at Europa Point in the early afternoon produced the following:-

18 Dec:  Overcast skies with a light drizzle in the morning.  Winds moderate easterly becoming variable to light westerly.

17 Dec:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

The Eagle Owl was again heard calling on the east side of the Rock.  The Long-legged Buzzard apparently wintering there as well.

At Rosia bay there was a Whimbrel and a Kingfisher, and the Pied Crow seen again at Europa Point.

A two hour watch at Europa point in the morning produced the following:-

16 Dec:  Overcast skies with sunny intervals.  Some showers passing south.  Winds moderate northerly.

Western beach held a Common Sandpiper, a Sandwich Tern, eight Black-headed Gulls, seven Cormorants and a White Wagtail.

Off Eastern beach there were eight Sandwich Terns, 10 Black-headed Gulls, 12 Gannets, a Cormorant and five Mediterranean Shearwaters.

An adult Mediterranean Gull was resting on Catalan Bay beach.  The Long-legged Buzzard was seen again above Catalan Bay.

15 Dec:  Overcast skies in the morning but with some sunny intervals during the afternoon.  Winds light westerly becoming moderate in the afternoon.

An early morning visit to Western beach produced two Common Sandpipers, 15 Cormorants, a Kingfisher, two Chiffchaffs and a White Wagtail.

In the vicinity of Mid Harbours marina there was a Little Egret and a Kingfisher.

There was a Black Redstart and two Stonechats around the Europa Mosque.

Most of the Mediterranean Shearwaters and Gannets flew into the Bay, with a few Shearwater rafts offshore.  The Pied Crow remained in the vicinity of the Europa area.

 

 

14 Dec:  Overcast skies with gale force easterly winds overnight and early morning.  Some showers and sunny periods in the afternoon.

Around the Waterport and North Mole area there were eight Sandwich Terns, six Gannets, 11 Cormorants and four Grey Herons.

Rosia bay held four Sandwich Terns, five Black-headed Gulls, two Mediterranean Gulls, three Gannets, a Blackcap, two Sardinian Warblers and 10 House Sparrows.

A morning walk along Camp and Little bays produced the following:-

Western beach also held a Collared Dove, three Common Sandpipers, 10 Sandwich Terns, 17 Black-headed Gulls, two Cormorants, a Kestrel, two Mynas, three Black Redstarts and a White Wagtail.

An afternoon watch at Europa Point produced the following:-

13 Dec:  Overcast skies together with levanter cloud over the Rock, Drizzle showers throughout most of the day.  Fresh easterly winds with strong gusts.

At Western beach there were two Common Sandpipers, a Ringed Plover and a Kingfisher.

12 Dec:  Overcast skies together with a heavy levanter over the Rock, Drizzle showers throughout most of the day.  Winds fresh easterly with strong gusts.

The Pied Crow is still present by the construction site at Europa walks.

 

11 Dec: Heavy levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour, together with light drizzle.  Winds moderate easterly.

A walk along Camp and Little Bays produced a Sandwich Tern, seven Cormorants, a Shag, a Grey Heron, 13 Chiffchaffs, with many feeding on insects attracted to the marine weed by the waterfall, five Sardinian Warblers, three Robins, three Black Redstarts and a Stonechat.

A one 11/2 hour watch at Europa Point and foreshore in the afternoon produced the following:-

10 Dec:  Cloudy with light drizzle throughout the day.  Winds light variable to moderate south-westerly in the afternoon.

A Pied Crow was observed around Bleak House, near Europa Point.  This is the second record of the species; the first was present from the 6th to the 14th April 2014.

09 Dec:  Levanter cloud over the Rock in the morning, clearing mid morning.  Winds light easterly.

There were five Grey Herons perched on rocks around Europa Point.  A flock of nine Cormorants flew west past Europa Point.

The Talus slope held 19 Barbary Partridges, a Chiffchaff, two Sardinian Warblers, five Black Redstarts and a Grey Wagtail.

The Eagle Owl was heard calling along the east side of the Rock.  The Long-legged Buzzard was observed above Catalan Bay.

A boat trip in the afternoon around the harbour produced five Sandwich Terns, five Black-headed Gulls, eight Cormorants, five Grey Herons and a Kingfisher.

 

07 Dec:  Clear skies with a light northerly wind becoming light and variable by mid morning.

A walk from Piccadilly Bar to Little Bay produced the following:-

Western Beach held a Common Sandpiper, two Sanderlings, nine Gannets, two Cormorants, 15 House Sparrows and a White Wagtail.

The Eagle Owl called once above Catalan Bay.

North Mole road held four Gannets, four Cormorants and two Grey Herons

 

06 Dec: Clear skies with a light to moderate north-westerly wind.

A Cattle Egret was seen above Little Bay.

 

05 Dec:  Cloudy with just a few sunny intervals.  Winds moderate westerly

Three Grey Herons at New harbours marina with a further five on the Detached Mole.  Grey Heron, Sparrowhawk and Kingfisher at Rosia bay, and the Long-legged Buzzard still present on the east side.

The Peregrine on the east side of the Rock, captured a Barbary Partridge.

A walk along the Botanic Gardens produced the following:-

A walk along Signal Station road from 10:00-12:00produced the following:-

A 25 minute watch from the Crematorium layby produced 11 Sandwich Terns, 165 Black-headed Gulls, six Mediterranean Gulls, 15 Gannets, two Shags and a Cormorant.

 

 

02 Dec:  Overcast skies with showers during the morning and afternoon.  Winds moderate westerly.

An afternoon walk along the Botanic gardens from 16:45-18:20 produced the following:-

01 Dec:  Cloudy skies also with a levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour.  Some sunny intervals with the occasional shower.  Winds fresh easterly.

A visit to North Front cemetery from 09:00-11:30 produced a fly-over Grey Heron west, 16 Chiffchaffs, nine Sardinian Warblers, six Blackbirds, four Robins, 17 Black Redstarts, two Blue Rock Thrushes, five Stonechats, 35 House Sparrows, three White Wagtails, four Goldfinches and a Serin.

A walk from Jumpers building to Commonwealth Park produced six Collared Doves, a Blue Tit, 12 Chiffchaffs, two Blackbirds, a Robin, four Black Redstarts and 53 House Sparrows.

Offshore at Eastern beach there were two Sanderlings, three Sandwich Terns, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 280 Mediterranean Shearwaters and nine Cormorants swimming close to the shore.

The Sparrowhawk was observed again at Rosia Bay.
