Bird Sightings November 2025

30 Nov:  Heavy rain showers in the morning with scattered showers in the afternoon and evening. a few sunny intervals in the afternoon.  Winds moderate south-westerly.

A visit to the Talus slope in the afternoon produced 25 Barbary Partridges, four Chiffchaffs, three Blue Tits, five Sardinian Warblers, three Black Redstarts, a Robin and two Stonechats.

A watch from Europa foreshore produced a Common Sandpiper, four Turnstones, two Black-headed Gulls, two Shags, eight Gannets,  seven Chiffchaffs, Robin, nine Black Redstart, a Blue Rock Thrush and Stonechat.

A watch from along Europa Advance road revealed 80 Mediterranean Shearwaters, five Shags, 12 Gannets, three Chiffchaffs, two Black Redstarts and two Stonechats.

A Jackdaw was seen at Moorish Castle estate and the Long-legged Buzzard was again observed on the east side of the Rock.

29 Nov:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

The Long-legged Buzzard was again observed on the east side of the Rock.

 

 

28 Nov:  Clear skies with a fresh westerly wind.

The Long-legged Buzzard was feeding above Catalan Bay.

A Kingfisher was spotted at the Med Rowing Club.

 

26 Nov:  A Common Sandpiper was observed at the Little Bay waterfall.  Also seen in Little Bay were a Grey Heron and a Little Egret, with a Kingfisher at Rosia Bay.

A Ringed Plover was present at the western end of the runway.

Four Sandwich Terns and eight Shags were seen at Europa Point.

 

25 Nov:  Mostly sunny with some westerly cloud.  Winds moderate westerly.

Two Red-rumped Swallows were observed behind the Crematorium, feeding with Crag Martins.

 

24 Nov:  Cloudy with some sunny intervals.  Winds moderate westerly.

The Long-legged Buzzard was again observed on the east side of the Rock.

 

23 Nov:  Clear skies with a light variable to light north-westerly.

A Zitting Cisticola was observed at Blackstrap Cove.

Two Goldcrests were found in the Alameda Botanic gardens, unfortunately one was found dead.  A Whimbrel was present at Camp Bay and a Grey Heron flew over Windmill Hill.

The Sparrowhawk was perched in a tree at Rosia Bay and later seen from Jews' Gate.

North Front cemetery held eight Chiffchaffs, five Sardinian Warblers, a Robin, two Stonechats and a Pied Wagtail.

A flock of eight Cormorants flew south over the Bay.  Kingfishers were observed at the Mid Harbours marina and Rosia Bay where there was a Grey Heron.

A Sparrowhawk was also seen over Windmill Hill.

21 Nov:  Clear skies with a moderate north-westerly in the morning turning to south-westerly in the afternoon.

North Front cemetery held 13 Chiffchaffs, two Robins, four Black Redstarts and five Sardinian Warblers.

A Scopoli's Shearwater was found in the South District area at Roger's Steps this morning.  It was taken into care by the Raptor Rehabilitation Unit.

18 Nov:  Mainly clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

At least 40 Gannets off the east side of the Rock. The Long-legged Buzzard was again observed along the east side of the Rock.

 

17 Nov: Cloudy with some showers and sunny intervals.  Winds moderate westerly.

Wet and windy conditions prevented the ringing effort.  Only two Robins were ringed.

A flock of 60 White Storks flew north over the Rock.

At least 20 Gannets were diving on a fish shoal off the east side reclamation, and three Audouin's Gulls were observed at Europa Point.

 

15 Nov: Sunny intervals in the morning, but overcast in the afternoon with some haevy rain showers.  Winds fresh south-westerly, becoming strong to gale force in the even

Only four new birds ringed this morning due to strong winds. A Chiffchaff, a Blackcap, a Black Redstart and a Greenfinch, together with a retrap Sardinian Warbler.

 

14 Nov: Overcast skies with rain showers and gale force westerly wind.

There were around 30 Sandwich Terns off Eastern beach.  The Kingfisher was again present in the Alameda Botanic gardens.

At Europa Point there were 20 Black-headed Gulls feeding, a Grey Heron and 15 Gannets heading east.  The Mid harbours Marina held a Whimbrel, a Little Egret and a Grey Heron.

08 Nov:  Some high cloud and levanter cloud forming over the Rock.  Winds light to moderate easterly.

No ringing due to windy conditions.

Small flocks of Mediterranean Shearwaters numbering 25 birds west past Europa Point.  There were two Grey Herons; one below Brewery crusher and another by Vanguard Cave.

06 Nov:  Some cloud at dawn but clear skies thereafter.  Winds moderate westerly.

No ringing due to windy conditions.

A morning watch at Europa Point and foreshore included a total of 170 Mediterranean Shearwaters in 30 minutes flying west plus the following totals:-

The second Red-breasted Flycatcher of the autumn was trapped and ringed at the Jews' Gate Observatory.

A watch at Europa Point in the morning and mid afternoon produced the following:-

Two Wheatears were at Europa foreshore.  A flock of 28 Cormorants flew south past Catalan bay.  A Kingfisher was observed at the Mid harbours marina.

Two Skylarks on nocturnal migration over the airfield at 23:00hrs.
