Bird Sightings July 2025

22 Jul: Clear skies with a moderate southerly wind.

A Whimbrel was present at Camp Bay.

 

 

21 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

At Europa Point there were three Whimbrels, four Audouin's Gulls, 25 Mediterranean Gulls, 34 Cory's Shearwaters, six Mediterranean Shearwaters, three Gannets, seven Shags, 61 Black Kites, and a Kestrel.

 

20 Jul:  Clear skies with a fresh south-westerly wind.

At Europa Point in the afternoon there were some Common and Pallid Swifts heading south, six Avocets,  a Black-headed Gull, 168 Audouin's Gulls with five juveniles, 26 Mediterranean Gulls, 97 Cory's Shearwaters, 11 Mediterranean Shearwaters, 23 Gannets, three Shags, 528 Black Kites and two Kestrels.

 

19 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh south-westerly wind.

Over 102 Black Kites flew south over the Rock in the early morning.  At least 60 more Black Kites were observed over the Rock in the late afternoon and evening, with several aborting a crossing and seen low at Europa Point .  Two first year Short-toed Eagles arrived across the Strait in the afternoon and headed north.

An afternoon watch at Europa Point produced two Whimbrels west, a Common Sandpiper, 15 Audouin's Gulls west,  a Mediterranean Gull, a Gull-billed Tern west, 15 Cory's Shearwaters, 246 Black Kite south, two Kestrels north, a Swallow and a Serin.

 

18 Jul:  Mainly clear skies with some high westerly cloud.  Winds moderate westerly, becoming fresh south-westerly in the Strait.

A watch from Europa point from 09:00-12:00hrs produced 15 Audouin's Gulls west, (11 adults, two first summer and two juveniles), a first summer Gannet west, six Shags west, two Grey Herons east, four Kestrels north, four Swallows and a Serin.

Also seen were the first Black Kites of the season with 29 birds flying south in the morning.

A three hour watch at Europa Point in the afternoon produced a Common Sandpiper, 11 Mediterranea Gulls, 28 Audouin's Gulls, a Shag, 31 Cory's Shearwaters, a Mediterranean Gull, a Gannet, 5 Shags, two Booted Eagles, 18 Black Kites north, (possibly an aborted crossing),  three Kestrels and a juvenile Lanner.

A Griffon Vulture flew north at 1300hrs.

 

 

17 Jul:  Clear skies with a light variable breeze becoming light westerly.

A juvenile Great Crested Grebe was observed in the early morning off Westview Promenade by Silaika and Albert Yome, within the harbour area.  This is the first record of the species for Gibraltar.

A Little Owl was heard in the morning between Charles V Road and Prince Philip's Arch.

 

 

16 Jul:  Levanter cloud over the Rock and town, dissipating in the early afternoon.  Winds light easterly.

A Robin was heard in the garden area of Atlantic Suites.  The Booted Eagle was seen again over Camp bay.

 

15 Jul:  Clear skies with a light easterly wind.

North Front cemetery held a Blue Tit and two Sardinian Warblers. The Booted Eagle was hunting over Jews' Gate.

A juvenile Audouin's Gull was seen in the evening at Europa Point.

 

14 Jul:  Clear skies with a light variable turning to light easterly wind.

An afternoon watch at Europa Point produced a Common Sandpiper, 28 Audouin's Gull,five Mediterranean Gulls,  a Gannet, 11 Cory's Shearwaters, 22 Mediterranean Shearwaters, and four Shags.  Two Zitting Cisticolas were seen at Europa Point in the morning.

 

13 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh south-westerly wind.

A three hour watch in the afternoon at Europa Point produced two Avocets,  , a Gull-billed Tern, three Black-headed Gulls, 105 Mediterranean Gulls , 51 Audouin's Gulls including two juveniles, 10 Cory's Shearwaters, 85 Mediterranean Shearwaters, 17 Shags including six juveniles,  a second summer Gannet, a Zitting Cisticola, a Serin and three Goldfinches.

12 Jul: Overcast skies in the morning, clearing by mid afternoon.  Winds moderate westerly.

An hours watch at Europa Point produced two Mediterranean Shearwaters, an adult Mediterranean Gull and three adult Audouin's Gull; all three species heading west.

A one and a half hour watch at Europa Point late afternoon produced an unseasonal adult Cormorant and three Shags east,  and three Audouin's Gulls west.

 

 11 Jul:  Some westerly cloud with sunny periods. Winds fresh north westerly.

A Spotted Flycatcher was observed at Trafalgar Cemetery.  Two Swallows headed north over Windmill Hill.

 

10 Jul:  Overcast skies with westerly cloud.  Light easterly in the early morning becoming moderate westerly.

A morning watch at Europa Point produced 40 Cory's Shearwaters feeding around a pod of dolphins. Two Mediterranean Shearwaters, small numbers of Yellow-legged Gulls,  and five Audouin's Gulls, all west.

 

09 Jul:  Overcast skies with a heavy levanter cloud over the Rock town and harbour.  Winds moderate easterly.

A juvenile Mistle Thrush was found dead at Laguna estate. A Spotted Flycatcher was present along Signal Station road.

08 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh westerly wind.

A Robin was present at the Botanic gardens.

07 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind, fresh in the Strait.

A morning watch at Europa Point was poor with only 10 Cory's Shearwaters , seven Balearic Shearwaters, two first summer Gannets, two adult Mediterranean Gulls, two Audouin's Gulls and three Swallows.

In the afternoon there were 148 Cory's Shearwaters, 27 Balearic Shearwaters, a Gannet, four Shags, two Audouin's Gulls and a Kestrel.

Two Honey Buzzards were observed heading north at midday.  The Booted Eagle was seen hunting over Rosia.

 

06 Jul:  Mainly clear skies, with overcast skies over the Moroccan coast and light levanter cloud developing over the Rock in the late morning.  Winds light variable to light south-westerly in the Strait and light easterly over the Rock.

A two hour watch at Europa Point in the early morning produced 28 Balearic Shearwaters west, 45 Cory's Shearwaters, three first summer Gannets, three Shags, two Black-headed Gulls, 28 Mediterranean Gulls ( 25 adults and three first summer) three Audouin's Gulls ( all second summer) all birds heading west.  Also seen were two Serins and a Zitting Cisticola.

Three Swallows were seen heading south over O'Hara's Battery, with another seen at North Gorge.
