Bird Sightings January 2025

20 Jan:  Overcast skies with a light variable to light westerly breeze.

A Kingfisher was observed at the New harbours Marina.

 

19 Jan:  High cloud and light levanter cloud with sunny intervals.  Winds moderate to light easterly.

There were 10 Meadow Pipits at Lathbury area. A Grey Heron flew over Windmill Hill.

 

18 Jan:   Light levanter cloud over the Rock, with clear skies away from the Rock.  Winds moderate easterly.

A Gannet, 200 Black-headed Gulls and a Turnstone present at Europa Point.  There were six Sanderlings at Western Beach, together with two White Wagtails, a Chiffchaff and a Black Redstart.

There was a Grey Heron, a Little Egret, four Shags, a Cormorant, a Common Sandpiper, three Sandwich Terns, a Kingfisher, a Black Redstart and a Greenfinch at Rosia Bay, and a Song Thrush at Vineyards.

Another Common Sandpiper was present at the outfall at Little Bay, and a Razorbill was observed at Camp Bay.

Western Beach held five Sanderling, a Common Sandpiper, three Black-headed Gulls, a Sandwich Tern, three Chiffchaffs, a Black Redstart and three White Wagtails.

Commonwealth Park held 16 Feral Pigeons, a Collared Dove, five Yellow-legged Gulls, three Blue Tits, five Chiffchaffs, four Blackcaps, four Sardinian Warblers, eight Blackbirds, two Robins and a White Wagtail, and Campion Park held six Feral Pigeons, a Blue Tit, and 11 House Sparrows.

In town there were 51 Feral Pigeons, 35 Yellow-legged Gulls, a Jackdaw, four Blue Tits, two Chiffchaffs, three Blackcaps, two Sardinian Warblers, a Blackbird, a Robin and 29 House Sparrows, and around the Port area there were five Feral Pigeons, four Chiffchaffs and 12 House Sparrows.

A Great Tit was again present at top entrance of the Botanic Gardens, and two Ravens flew over Jews' Gate.

A Sparrowhawk was seen over the east side reclamation.

 

 

17 Jan:  An early morning shower from the east with sporadic clouds and sunny intervals.  Winds moderate easterly.

Grey Herons were present at the Detached Mole and New Harbours Marina, wiyh another on the Calpe Rowing Club pontoon.

There were four Jackdaws at Varyl Begg Estate.

 

16 Jan:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

A Razorbill was observed at Camp Bay. A Marsh Harrier flew north in the afternoon.

A Mediterranean Gull was present with Black-headed Gulls at Europa Point.

 

 

15 Jan:  Levanter cloud over the Rock with some sunny intervals.  Winds moderate easterly.

The first day of the 2025 ringing campaign produced the following:-

14 Jan:  Cloudy skies with some sunny intervals and a heavy shower mid morning, with some more rain mid afternoon.  Winds fresh and at times strong easterly.

An afternoon visit to Europa Point produced 10 Gannets, 15 Balearic Shearwaters west, four Cormorants, four Shags, 90 Black-headed Gulls, two Mediterranean Gulls west, and two Sandwich Terns.  The foreshore held two Common Sandpipers, three Chiffchaffs, a Sardinian Warbler, a Blue Rock Thrush, a Stonechat and four Goldfinches.

A Grey Wagtail was present at Little Bay.

 

13 Jan:  Cloudy skies with sunny intervals.  Winds fresh easterly.

Four Sanderlings were present at Eastern Beach.

 

 

12 Jan:  Clear skies with a moderate north-westerly in the morning becoming south-wsterly at midday.

A Morning visit to Windmill Hill produced three Barbary Partridges, a Kestrel, a Peregrine, 55 Crag Martins, eight Chiffchaffs, eight Blackcaps, 37 Sardinian Warblers, a Zitting Cisticola, two Wrens, three Spotless Starlings, eight Song Thrushes, 10 Blackbirds, 13 Robins, 13 Black Redstarts, six Stonechats, 14 Meadow Pipits, a White Wagtail, a Chaffinch, four Greenfinches, a Linnet, three Goldfinches and a Serin.

A midday visit to Europa Point produced eight Gannets, a Cormorant, 140 Black-headed Gulls, a 2nd/w Little Gull two Lesser Black-backed Gulls and five Sandwich Terns.

 

11 Jan:  Cloudy skies in a fresh westerly wind, beginning to clear with sunny intervals in the late morning..

10 Jan:  Clear skies in a moderate to fresh north-westerly wind.

There were 80 Black-headed Gulls, together with a Cormorant , a Grey Heron, and an Audouin's Gull at Europa Point. A 1st/w Mediterranean Gull was seen there later.

A Kingfisher was present at Queensway Quay.  A Griffon Vulture was seen above Catalan Bay, heading south.  This may be the same bird that was released from captivity on the 8th.  A Little Egret was seen at Ocean Village.

 

 

09 Jan:  Cloudy skies with a chance of a rain shower.  Winds fresh to strong south-westerly.

A Little Owl was heard from the east side reclamation.

At Europa Point there were 30 Gannets,(with 10 w), 4 Shags w, five Balearic Shearwaters w, a Great Skua w, 80 Black-headed Gulls feeding, four Mediterranean Gulls (an ad, a 3rd/w, and 2 1st/w), a 2nd/w Audouins Gull w, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls w ( ad, 2nd/w), and a Sandwich Tern w.

 

 

08 Jan:  Clear skies with a light westerly wind in the morning becoming moderate south-westerly in the afternoon.

Europa Point held a Grey Heron, a Little Egret, a Common Sandpiper, 100 Black-headed Gulls, two Collared Doves, a Robin, three Black Redstarts, and a Serin.

A Griffon Vulture was released after a period at the raptor Rehabilitation Unit.  It was seen later heading north followed by a flock of Yellow-legged Gulls.

 

07 Jan:  Clear skies with a moderate north westerly wind.

A visit to Europa foreshore produced six Cormorants, two Shags, 11 Turnstones, a Grey Heron, four Black-headed Gulls,  a Chiffchaff, a Black Redstart, a Stonechat, and a Blue Rock Thrush.

Two Kittiwakes flew east past Europa Point.

 

06 Jan:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

There were 30 Gannets off Eastern Beach.  A White Wagtail was also seen at this site.

Around the Frontier area four Crested Larks and a White Wagtail were observed.

 

05 Jan:  High cloud increasing in the afternoon with light showers in the evening. Winds moderate westerly.

North Front Cemetery held a Sardinian Warbler, seven Blackbirds, two Robins, six Black Redstarts and a White Wagtail.

 

 

04 Jan:  Clear skies with a light north westerly wind.

An early morning visit to Western Beach produced a Common Sandpiper, a Little Egret, a Black-headed Gull and a Black Redstart.

At Europa Point there were three Gannets, two Shags,11 Black-headed Gulls, two Blue Rock Thrushes, five Black Redstarts and three Goldfinches.

Along Green Lane a Great Tit, four Blackcaps, a Wren, a Robin, two Black Redstarts and a Chaffinch.

The Sparrowhawk was seen again around Jews' Gate area.  Three Ravens were observed over O' Hara's Battery.

 

 

03 Jan:  Some cloud from the west and light levanter cloud over the Rock in a light easterly becoming light variable to light westerly in the afternoon.

Two Grey Herons were observed fishing on the pontoons at Ocean Village.

An Osprey flew north over Windmill Hill.

 

 

02 Jan: Clear skies at dawn but heavy clouds from the east with a small shower over Jews' Gate in the morning.  Levanter cloud persisting over the Rock, town and harbour but sunny intervals away from the Rock.  Winds moderate easterly.

A Grey Heron was present at Little Bay, and two Cormorants and a Little Egret was observed by the GSLA pavilion.

The four Jackdaws were seen again by Moorish Castle Estate, and a Sparrowhawk was observed over Parson's Lodge.

 

 

 

01 Jan:  Overcast skies in the morning with persistant showers.  Sunny Intervals in the afternoon.Winds moderate easterly.

A Grey Heron flew east over Buena Vista.  A 2nd/w Audouin's Gull wasobserved at Little Bay.

Along Europa Road there were two Great Tits, a Blue Tit, two Robins and four Black Redstarts.

The Slender-billed Gull was again present at Western Beach, in the company of 13 Black-headed Gulls and three Sandwich Terns.

A Sparrowhawk was seen around Signal Station road where the Eagle Owl was heard calling.

At Europa foreshore there were five Gannets, a Cormorant east, six Shags (4 east, two west), six Turnstones, a Little Egret east, two Black Redstarts, a Blue Rock Thrush and a Stonechat.
