Recent sightings July 2024

31 Jul:  Mainly clear skies but some hazy sunshine due to saharan dust.  Winds moderate south-westerly.

A walk along Signal Station Road produced a Kestrel, six Ravens, three Sardinian Warblers, a Blackcap, four Greenfinches and two Spotted Flycatchers.

In the evening about 100 Black Kites flew north over the Rock, having aborted a crossing.

 

29 Jul:  Overcast skies together with levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour.  Winds moderate easterly with strong gusts.

Two Spotted Flycatchers were observed along the Rosia promenade, with others heard calling from the Mount area.

 

28 Jul:  Overcast skies with levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour and cloudy elsewhere .  Winds moderate easterly.

A walk along Signal Station road produced four Barbary Partridges, a Booted Eagle, a Hoopoe, a Peregrine Falcon, a Raven, two Blue Tits, 10 Sardinian Warblers, four Wrens, eight Blackbirds, a Spotted Flycatcher and five Greenfinches.

A Nightingale was uttering its alarm call around Jews Gate.  Two Alpine Swifts were around the North Face of the Rock.  Two Crested Larks were observed by the frontier fence.

 

27 Jul: Fog early in the morning, clearing mid morning to give a sunny day.  Winds light variable to light easterly becoming moderate in the evening.

A Kingfisher was present along the east coast of the Rock.  The six Ravens were observed around St. Michael's road area.

A Gannet and five Shags were seen from Europa Point.

 

25 Jul: Clear skies with a light variable to light and moderate westerly in the afternoon.

A Grey Heron flew north over town.  Some Black Kites were seen high over the runway at midday and a few headed south over the Rock in the late afternoon and evening.

 

24 Jul:  Levanter cloud over the Rock, clearing by midday.  Winds moderate easterly.

A Hoopoe was seen along Queen's road on the Nature Reserve.

 

 

22 Jul:  Heavy levanter cloud over the Rock, town and harbour in strong easterlies with strong gusts, becoming fresh easterly by mid afternoon.

The Mynas seem to have fledged young.

There were 30 Black Kites struggling in the easterlies early in the morning, with three more after midday.

 

 

 

21 Jul:  Clear skies with a strong south-westerly wind becoming fresh westerly mid morning.

An early morning watch at Europa Point produced a Cory's Shearwaters, 18 Shags west,  45 Audouin's Gulls ( seven juveniles, a second cycle, and a third cycle and 36 adults) several hundred Yellow-legged Gulls heading west, four Swallows and 18 Common Swifts.

Six Ravens were seen over the Rock.

Raptor passage composed of Black Kites commenced at dawn with at over 200 birds heading south-west in the morning.  Small numbers continued to cross in the late afternoon and evening for a total of 111 birds.

20 Jul:  Still some hazy sunshine but clearing with improved visibility.  Winds moderate south-westerly becoming fresh mid morning and strong in the Strait.

Some Black Kite passage mid morning and resumed mid afternoon for a total of approximately 200 birds.  Also seen were two light morph Eleonora's Falcon over the top station of the Cable car.

A morning watch at Europa Point saw seven Cory's Shearwaters three Oystercatchers and 14 Shags.  A further two Oystercatchers were observed at Europa Point during a 2hr watch together with a Common Sandpiper and 20 Audouin's Gulls.  Also seen were several Common Swifts, four Kestrels and a Black Kite heading north.

A Bonelli's Warbler was seen along Charles V road in the Nature Reserve.

 

19 Jul:  Hazy skies with Saharan dust in a light easterly becoming light variable and calm.

A watch at Europa Point from 18:00-19:15 hrs in flat calm conditions produced a Cory's Shearwater and 11 Audouins's Gulls with seven adults , one second cycle and three juveniles.

 

 

18 Jul:  Cloudy and overcast with dense fog and heavy levanter cloud over the Rock.  Winds moderate easterly.

A Spotted Flycatcher observed in Trafalgar Cemetery, and a Hoopoe in the Lathbury area.

 

 

17 Jul:  Cloudy and overcast with dense fog and heavy levanter cloud over the Rock.  Winds moderate easterly.

A Booted Eagle was seen over the town mid afternoon.

 

 

16 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly becoming fresh south-westerly in the Strait.

Four Black Kites flew south, and three Short-toed Eagles flew in from across the Strait and flew north.

An afternoon watch at Europa Point produced five Cory's Shearwaters, a Whimbrel, 18 Audouin's Gulls (15 adults, a third cycle, and two juvenile birds), an adult Black-headed Gull, five adult Mediterranean Gulls all west, and a Kestrel heading north.

15 Jul:  Clear skies with a fresh south-westerly wind.

A Black Kite was observed heading north and probably an aborted southerly migrant.

An evening at Europa Point produced a Cory's Shearwater, 10 Shags heading east, two Audouin's Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull.  Also seen a Kestrel heading north.

 

 

13 Jul:  Two Great Tits were observed by Engineer Road.

A juvenile male Goshawk in a weak state suffering from starvation and dehydration was found outside the GASA pools.  It was rescued and taken into care at the Raptor Rehabilitation Centre.

12 Jul: Three Honey Buzzards flew north over the Rock, and a Black Kite flew south.

 A late afternoon watch at Europa Point produced a Gannet, five Shags and three Mediterranean Gulls.

 

 

11 Jul:  Clear skies with a fresh westerly wind.

The Bonelli's Warbler was seen again in the Nature Reserve where a juvenile Serin was also seen.

An evening watch at Europa point from 18:30-21:00 produced many Cory's Shearwaters offshore, eight Audouin's Gulls and 10 Mediterranean Gulls.

 

 

10 Jul: A late evening watch at Europa Point produced 15 Cory's Shearwaters, eight Shags east, and 19 Audouin's Gulls.

A Booted Eagle pale morph was seen hunting over Royal Anglian Way, and a Spotted Flycatcher was observed along Queen's Road.

 

 

09 Jul: Europa Point produced 52 Cory's Shearwaters, 28 Balearic Shearwaters, two Gannets, two Audouin's Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull.

 

 

07 Jul: A three hour watch at Europa Point saw a constant movement of Audouin's Gulls with 88 birds of which three were juvenile birds.  Also seen were a Gannet, 37 Cory's Shearwaters, 13 Balearic Shearwaters, 22 Mediterranean Gulls, and two Kestrels.

A Bonelli's Warbler was observed in the Nature Reserve. A Short-toed Eagle arrived across the Strait and flew north

 

 

06 Jul: A visit to Windmill Hill produced 12 Barbary Partridges that included nine juvenile birds, three Peregrines, two Kestrels, seven Sardinian Warblers, a Blackbird and six House Sparrows.

An early morning watch at Europa Point produced two Cory's Shearwaters, Balearic Shearwater, 17 Shags, four Audouin's Gulls and two Mediterranean Gulls, and in the early afternoon a Shag and two Audouin's Gulls.

A Griffon Vulture headed north around midday.

 

 

05 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

At Europa Point the first juvenile Audouin's Gull was observed tigether with an adult bird.  Also seen was a Black-headed Gull.

 

 

03 Jul: A juvenile Yellow Wagtail was observed at Europa Point, and a juvenile Chaffinch was seen along Green Lane and another juvenile near Bruce's Farm

Single Audouin's and Mediterranean Gulls observed at Europa Point.

 

 

01 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate south-westerly becoming fresh after midday.

An Egyptian Vulture and two Short-toed Eagles flew north today.

Six Ravens were seen together over the Rock.
