Recent Sightings October 2020

20 Oct:  Overcast in the region, with heavy levanter cloud over the town and harbour.  Winds fresh easterly.  A late Pied Flycatcher was seen in the Botanic Gardens.  A mornings ringing at Jews' Gate produced a Blackbird, a Song Thrush, two Common Redstarts, nine Black Redstarts, 10 Sardinian Warblers, a Garden Warbler, 45 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, a Wryneck, a Serin and 10 Greenfinches.


19 Oct:  Levanter cloud over the Rock with sunny spells in the late afternoon.  Winds moderate easterly.A Spotted Flycatcher was present in the Botanic Gardens and a Dartford Warbler was seen at North Front Cemetery.


18 Oct:  Light easterly with some levanter cloud over the Rock. A Whinchat was present at North Front Cemetery.  A boat trip around the Rock in the morning produced a Kingfisher on the western end of the runway, 20 Gannets, two Cormorants, two Shags, 200 Cory's Shearwaters, four Balearic Shearwaters, 15 Black-headed Gulls, eight Mediterranean Gulls, and four Sandwich Terns.  Also seen were a pod of Bottle-nosed Dolphins and a Sperm Whale.


17 Oct:  Clear skies with a light westerly wind.  There were 28 Black-headed Gulls resting on the cliff below Europa Point.  A few Cory's Shearwaters were still present offshore, and some Gannets were seen heading into the mediterranean.  Three Song Thrushes were seen flying over Westview Promandade.


15 Oct:  High cloud with sunny spells.  Winds moderate westerly.  A Kingfisher was present at the GSLA swimming site, a Sparrowhawk was seen over the south district and a Booted Eagle was observed along the east side of the Rock.


14 Oct:  Clear skies with some high cloud.  Winds moderate to fresh north-westerly.  A Booted Eagle was seen soaring over town.


13 Oct:  Some light levanter cloud over the Rock, clearing mid morning in a light easterly wind.  Winds turning to a light variable in the afternoon.  A Grey Heron flew low over Europort early in the morning.  A light phase Booted Eagle was seen over town, and single Spotted Flycatcher and Short-toed Treecreeper present at the Botanic Gardens. Two Booted Eagles were seen over town.


12 Oct:  Heavy levanter cloud in the morning clearing by midday for clear skies.  Winds light to moderate becoming fresh by midday. easterly.  A visit to the North Front Cemetery produced two Northern Wheatears, three Stonechats, two Whinchats and six Pied Flycatchers.  Plenty of flocks of Crag Martins were seen heading north from Jews' Gate.  Grey Herons were seen at the North Mole and over the Botanic Gardens, and a Common Sandpiper was present along the foreshore at Westview Park.

A flock of 15-20 Crag Martins were feeeding over the Botanic Gardens.


11 Oct:  Levanter cloud over the Rock but sunny spells away from the town.  A short visit to Europa Point in the morning produced two rafts of Cory's Shearwaters numbering approximately 200 birds, with one Balearic Shearwater heading east.  A Great Skua put up the raft of Cory's Shearwaters.  An Oystercatcher flew past, and below the Point there were 40 Black-headed Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull feeding, together with a Cormorant that turned up much later.  Gannets continued to enter the Mediterranean with some small flocks of adults heading east.  Overhead a small flock of Crag Martins flew south.

A Booted Eagle was seen over the south mole and another along the east side of the Rock.  At the western end of the runway there were seven Cormorants and a Common Sandpiper.


10 Oct:  Foggy early in the morning with low levanter cloud over the Rock.  Cloud persisting until late afternoon with some sunny spells.  Winds moderate easterly.  A Cuckoo was flushed from vegetation at Middle Hill.  Five Cormorants were present at the western end of the runway.  A mixed flock of Crag Martins, House Martins and Red-rumped Swallows were seen over the Botanic Gardens.


09 Oct:  Levanter cloud over the town and harbour, in fresh easterly winds.  A Kingfisher was present below Parsons Lodge.


06 Oct:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.  A juvenile Hobby was seen from Windmill Hill.  A Cormorant was observed off Europort.  A flock of over 40 Crag Martins flying over Buena Vista.


05 Oct:  Clear skies with a light westerly wind. A dark phase Booted Eagle was seen over Windmill Hill and turned north.  Seven Cormorants and a Grey Heron were present at the western end of the runway.


04 Oct:  Clear skies in the morning but high cloud in the afternoon.  Winds light to moderate west to north-westerly winds.  A Grey Heron was seen at Camp Bay, and four Black Storks were observed over the Rock.  A watch from Europa Point produced 60 Cory's Shearwaters, three Gannets, a Shag, 10 Black-headed Gulls and a Great Skua.


03 Oct: Clear skies with a fresh and cold northerly wind.  Small passage of raptors with two Honey Buzzards, eight Short-toed Eagles and 10 Sparrowhawks by mid morning.  The Eurobirdwatch at Europa Point produced several hundred Cory's Shearwaters far offshore, three Balearic Shearwaters, two Cormorants, a steady passage of Gannets with at least 20 birds into the mediterranean, two Great Skuas, an Arctic Skua, 40 Black-headed Gulls, seven Mediterranean Gulls, two Audouin's Gulls, and adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, four Sandwich Terns and seven Common Terns.  Down at the foreshore there were four Yellow Wagtails, a Northern Wheatear, and a Turnstone.  Twenty-four Swallows were seen following the coastline, and a Spotted Flycatcher was observed in vegetation close by.

A Grey Heron was seen flying towards the south mole.


02 Oct: Cloudy skies with some light showers in the afternoon.  Winds fresh westerly.  A Cormorant flew over Europlaza in the early afternoon.


01 Oct:  Clear skies with some high cloud, and moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly wind.  Two Grey Herons were seen at the small boats marina, and a Kingfisher was present at Westview Promenade.
