Recent Sightings July 2020

 

30 Jul:  Heavy levanter cloud in the morning with cloud remaining and some sunny spells into the afternoon.  A Booted Eagle was seen soaring over the south District.  Two adult Woodchat Shrikes were seen by Signal Station Road in the Nature reserve.

 

29 Jul:  Mainly clear skies with some levanter cloud.  Winds moderate easterly.  A dark phase Booted Eagle was seen over Windmill Hill.

 

28 Jul:  Clear skies with a light to moderate westerly wind freshening in the afternoon to south-westerly.  A light phase Booted Eagle was seen soaring over Signal Hill, and 13 Black Kites were counted migrating south over the Rock.  A watch at Europa Point produced approximately 1000 Cory's Shearwaters, a Yelkouan Shearwater, five Gannets, two Oystercatchers, and 80 Audouin's Gulls; at least 50 were juvenile birds.  A Black Kite was also seen returning north from the Strait.

 

26 Jul:  Mainly clear skies with some wisps of levanter cloud in the morning.  Winds moderate easterly.  A Booted Eagle was observed over Jews' Gate.

 

25 Jul:  Cloudy with levanter in the morning clearing by midday with fresh easterly winds. Three light phase Booted Eagles were seen in the south of the Rock, hunting.

 

22 Jul:  Cloudy skies in the morning clearing by midday with light easterly winds.  A Booted Eagle was seen heading north over the Rock.

 

19 Jul:  Heavy Levanter cloud over the Rock and the surrounding area with sunny spells late in the afternoon.  Two Ravens were seen on the east side of the Rock.  and a Puffin was reported 1.5 miles to the east of the Rock.

 

16 Jul:  Levanter cloud over the Rock with a fresh easterly wind.  Three Iberian Chiffchaffs were present at the Botanic gardens, and a Robin was seen at Trafalgar Cemetery.

 

15 Jul:  Levanter cloud over the Rock with fresh easterly winds.  A Booted Eagle was seen over the southern end of the Rock.

 

13 Jul:  Cloudy skies in the morning with levanter cloud over the Rock clearing after midday.  Winds light to moderate easterly.  There were two Iberian Chiffchaffs present in the Botanic Gardens.

 

11 Jul:  Levanter cloud over the town and harbour with fresh easterly winds.  A Robin was heard in vegetation below Scud Hill.

 

07 Jul:  Mainly clear skies with a light westerly wind.  A Grey Heron was seen over town.

 

03 Jul:  Clear skies with a moderate sout-westerly becoming light northerly over Rock Gun and at the head of the Bay, but light southerly at Europa point.  An hours watch at this site produced three Balearic Shearwaters, 3 Gannets, 12 Mediterranean Gulls, nine Audouin's Gulls and six Shags.  A Black Kite was seen heading north in the late evening.

 

02 Jul:  Clear skies with a fresh south-westerly wind becoming north westerly .  A Short-toed Eagle was seen heading north over the Rock mid afternoon.  A flock of three Glossy Ibises were seen heading north at 09:45hrs high over town.
