Recent Sightings January 2020
31 Jan: Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind. The first Black Kite of the season was seen heading north over the Rock. And the first Hoopoe was seen in the area of St. Bernard's Church.
27 Jan: Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind. An Osprey was seen heading north over the Rock.
26 Jan: An early Hoopoe was seen in the Sandpits area; the first of the season.
15 Jan: Clear skies with a light variable to light westerly wind. Ten Cormorants were seen on the Detached Mole and a Kingfisher was observed in the Marina. Three Grey Herons were seen from Westview Promenade.
10 Jan: Levanter cloud over the Rock with a moderate to fresh easterly wind. Birds at the western end of the runway consisted of 24 Black-headed Gulls, five Sandwich Terns, five Black Redstarts, 11 Cormorants and single Grey Heron, Crested Lark, Linnet and Common Sandpiper. In the evening 10 Grey Herons and a Cormorant flew past Westview Promenade on their way to their roost.
06 Jan: Levanter cloud over the town and harbour in the morning clearing to give sunny spells in the afternoon. Winds moderate easterly. A male Spanish Sparrow and a Dartford Warbler were observed in the vicinity of Europa Point.

04 Jan: Cloudy over the town and harbour in the morning clearing in the afternoon. Winds light variable to light easterly increasing to moderate in the evening. There were 21 Black-headed Gulls, 14 Cormorants and three Grey Herons at the western end of the runway. Another Grey Heron was present close to Governor's Beach. Six Sandwich Terns were observed at Camp Bay , with another three off Westview Promenade together with a Cormorant. A Sparrowhawk was seen chasing birds at Windmill Hill. The colour ringed Black-headed Gull RKSF was still present among the 40 Black-headed Gulls resting on the cliff at Europa point. Offshore seven Balearic Shearwaters flew west with another seven east. Eight Cormorants were resting on cliffs on the east side of the Rock.
The two Ravens were seen over the southern end of the Rock.
02 Jan: Clear skies with a light variable wind. At least 45 Black-headed Gulls were still present at Europa point with approximately 5 Gannets feeding offshore. A Kingfisher was seen around the GASA Pools in the morning.
01 Jan: Mainly clear skies with some high cloud. Winds light westerly. At Europa point there were about 65 Black-headed Gulls at Europa point including the colour ringed birds RKSF, and T39J. Also with them a third winter Mediterranean Gull. Several Gannets were seen offshore together with a single Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Balearic Shearwater.
