December 2018 Sightings

 

31 Dec:  A Grey Heron was seen on the rocks below Parson's Lodge Battery.

 

28 Dec:  The Magpie was spotted at the Garrison Library gardens.

 

26 Dec:  The Common Sandpiper was still present at Westview Promenade.

 

25 Dec:  A Common Sandpiper and a Sandwich Tern were observed at the Westview Promenade.  Also 3 Common Scoters flying north just off the North Mole and then wheeling around and flying past the Detached Mole.

 

23 Dec:  Light easterly with some slight levanter cloud.  A Sparrowhawk was observed at Camp Bay.  At Europa Point there were at least 80 Black-headed Gulls.  Amongst those landed on the cliff below the Point, were two birds with white colour rings; E6PT seen on the 21st January 2018 and again on the 16th December 2018.

20 Dec:  A Storm Petrel was picked up exhausted and taken into care, and was released the following day.

 

19 Dec:  Approximately 12 Cormorants were observed at the western end of the runway.

 

17 Dec: Mainly clear skies with some high cloud.  Winds light westerly.  The Grey Wagtail was again seen at Commonwealth Park.

 

16 Dec:  A Black-headed Gull with a white colour ring with the code E6PT was seen sitting on the cliffs at Europa Point.  This bird is a returning winter visitor and was last recorded on the 21st January of 2018.

 

14 Dec: A Grey Wagtail was observed at Commonwealth Park. A Common Sandpiper was seen on the groyne at Eastern Beach.

 

13 Dec:  Two Cormorants were present at the pond in Commonwealth Park

 

04 Dec:  Foggy morning but clearing mid morning to give a sunny and warm day.  Light easterly winds.  The wintering roost of Crag Martins at the Gorham's Cave Complex, was targeted and a total of 50 new birds were ringed, and included a local retrap and a control with a Spanish ring.

 

02 Dec:  Cloudy in the morning but soon clearing to give a bright and sunny day with some high cloud.  Winds light variable.  The Magpie was spotted on a rooftop close to where the Theatre Royal was located.
